The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected an application by Omoyele Sowore seeking an extended adjournment in his alleged cyberbullying trial, ordering the defence to continue its case on July 16.

Sowore’s lawyer had asked the court to postpone proceedings until after the annual vacation, citing the absence of the lead defence counsel, who is currently out of the country.

The Department of State Services opposed the request, arguing that the matter had already suffered several adjournments and that the court had earlier ordered an accelerated hearing.

In his ruling, Justice Mohammed Umar declined the application and directed that the defence continue as scheduled.

During the proceedings, the defence’s first witness testified that President Bola Tinubu had previously stated that Nigerians have the right to criticise their leaders, while acknowledging under cross-examination that the President also maintained that anyone who violates the law should face due process.

The matter was adjourned until July 16 for the continuation of the defence.
