The camp of former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has dismissed claims by the National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, that Kwankwaso and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi demanded the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during a Hausa political programme on DITV Kaduna, Baba-Ahmed claimed that discussions between the PRP and the two politicians failed after disagreements over conditions for joining the party.

According to him, both Obi and Kwankwaso approached the PRP seeking collaboration ahead of the 2027 general elections, but allegedly requested assurances that they would secure the party’s presidential ticket without opposition.

Baba-Ahmed said the party rejected the request, insisting that anyone seeking elective office under the PRP must first formally join the party and follow its internal democratic processes.

“We told them no, this is PRP; we do not practice that kind of politics,” he said, adding that the party could not violate its constitution despite acknowledging the political influence of both men.

He further alleged that the camps of Obi and Kwankwaso requested several party positions because of the number of supporters they intended to bring into the party.

Reacting to the claims, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Habeeb Saleh Mohammed, dismissed the allegations and accused Baba-Ahmed of seeking attention.

Mohammed stated that he was unaware of any formal meeting where Kwankwaso or Obi demanded the PRP presidential ticket, insisting that the PRP leadership had instead publicly appealed to both politicians and members of the opposition coalition to join the party.

“I don’t think there was a time, not to my knowledge, when they presented themselves to the PRP and demanded to be given the presidential ticket,” he said.

He described the allegation as baseless and unsubstantiated, adding that it should not have warranted any response from the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso have since joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
