Bayelsa Government Intervenes in Elepa Oil Wells Dispute to Avert Communal Crisis

Date:

Tension is mounting in Nembe and Brass Local Government Areas of Bayelsa State following a renewed ownership dispute over the Elepa Oil Wells, operated by Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited, formerly Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).

The oil-rich Elepa Oil Wells 1 and 2 have been at the centre of a protracted legal battle between Egweama in Brass LGA and the Nembe community in Nembe LGA. The legal contention has recently escalated into communal hostilities, prompting fears of potential conflict and displacement among residents.

In a bid to forestall a full-blown crisis, Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has stepped in to broker peace between the two communities.

Following consultations with stakeholders, the Deputy Governor announced an interim arrangement to share benefits from the oil wells among the disputing communities. Under the new directive, 40 percent of all royalties, employment opportunities, and contractual benefits from Renaissance Africa Energy will be allocated to Elepa community, while Egweama and Nembe communities will each receive 30 percent.

Ewhrudjakpo praised the composure and leadership shown by community leaders throughout the dispute and urged all parties to remain calm and law-abiding.

“I commend your patience and the efforts made so far to avoid violence. Let us maintain peace and allow the judiciary to conclude its work. The Court of Appeal’s final ruling on the ownership issue should be respected by all,” he said.

The state government assured residents that it remains committed to a peaceful resolution of the dispute and will continue to monitor developments closely to prevent further escalation.
