The Presidency has firmly rejected allegations by former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, who accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of backing the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency described Lamido’s comments—made during a live television appearance—as a distortion of historical facts and a regrettable act of revisionism.
The statement cited President Tinubu’s documented opposition to the annulment, including a Senate debate on August 19, 1993, where he condemned the cancellation of the election as a “coup against democracy.”
The Presidency further criticized Lamido’s own role during the June 12 crisis, accusing him and others within the Social Democratic Party (SDP) leadership of capitulating to military rule and undermining the mandate of the presumed winner, Chief MKO Abiola, by aligning with opposition forces at the time.
Describing Lamido’s remarks as the latest in what it termed “attacks from the coalition of the disgruntled,” the statement urged him to verify facts before making public statements, adding that such revisionist narratives undermine Nigeria’s democratic history.
