Otti Warns Against Early 2027 Talk, Reaffirms Support for Tinubu’s Economic Reforms

Date:

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has cautioned political actors against discussing the 2027 general elections barely two years into the current administration, describing such actions as presumptuous and likening them to “playing God.”

Speaking on Sunday while hosting former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu and Senator Chris Adighije in Umuahia, Otti emphasized the uncertainty of the future, urging politicians to focus on delivering results in the present.

“People in 2025 are talking of 2027… you can’t even talk about 2027 because there is no guarantee that you would go beyond 2025. Who are you to begin to talk about 2027?” Otti asked. “Today is certain; tomorrow is a promise. Next tomorrow is gambling.”

The visit, described as a friendly one, provided an opportunity for both senators to commend Otti for his performance in office and discuss governance issues.

Governor Otti also reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu, particularly regarding the removal of fuel subsidy—a move he described as courageous and necessary for economic reform.

“Supporting President Tinubu is a no-brainer. We agree on many economic issues. The removal of subsidy was long overdue and a bold move,” Otti said, referencing his past advocacy for subsidy removal in his newspaper columns.

He noted that correcting decades of what he called “irresponsible behavior” would inevitably be tough and painful, but expressed optimism that the country would emerge stronger if it stayed the course.

Otti thanked Orji Kalu for his previous contributions to Abia and acknowledged the road infrastructure improvements started during Kalu’s administration, which he said his government has continued.

In his remarks, Senator Kalu described Otti as “a friend for life,” praised the state’s development under his leadership, and called on him to remain supportive of President Tinubu.

“You have done well for our state. Thank you very much. I want to make it clear: the state will continue to grow under your leadership,” Kalu said, particularly lauding the rehabilitation of the road linking Igbere, Umuahia, and Ohafia.

Senator Adighije also expressed support for Otti, describing him as a capable leader who has prioritized progress over partisanship. He echoed calls for the governor to maintain a close working relationship with President Tinubu for the good of the state.
