EFCC Secures Record-Breaking 4,111 Convictions, Achieves Largest Asset Recovery in History

Date:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced a historic milestone in its 2024 operations, securing a record-breaking 4,111 convictions and achieving its largest single-year asset recovery since its establishment in 2003.

According to the EFCC’s 2024 Statistical Report, the commission received 15,724 petitions and launched investigations into 12,928 cases across its zonal directorates. Out of these, 5,083 cases were filed in court, with advance fee fraud, money laundering, and cybercrime identified as the most prevalent offenses.

The commission attributed the high volume of cases to rising unemployment, an expanding informal economy, and weak regulatory frameworks.

The convictions were secured across 15 states, including the EFCC headquarters in Abuja. The Lagos Zone led with 685 convictions, followed by Enugu (516), while Maiduguri recorded the lowest (95).

In a historic asset recovery move, the commission seized over 750 duplexes and apartments, among other forfeitures, marking the largest asset recovery in EFCC history.

Reaffirming its commitment to fighting financial crimes, the EFCC pledged to continue working with local and international partners to enhance asset recovery frameworks and combat corruption across Nigeria.
