Trial Begins for 7 Healthcare Professionals Accused of Negligence in Maradona’s Death

Date:

Four years after the death of Argentine football icon Diego Maradona, seven healthcare professionals are set to stand trial, accused of negligence during his final days.

The trial, which begins on Tuesday in San Isidro, a suburb of Buenos Aires, will feature testimony from over 100 witnesses, including members of Maradona’s family and doctors who treated him throughout his life. The proceedings are expected to last four months.

The seven defendants face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years if convicted.

Diego Armando Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60, while recovering from brain surgery to treat a blood clot. He had long struggled with cocaine and alcohol addictions.

Maradona was found dead in bed at a rented house in an upscale Buenos Aires neighborhood, where he had been staying after being discharged from the hospital two weeks earlier. His death was later determined to be the result of a heart attack.
