President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff. This development follows the untimely demise of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away on November 5 after a brief illness.
The President’s letter, read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary, invoked Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act as the legal basis for the confirmation request. These provisions underscore the President’s constitutional responsibility to seek legislative approval for military appointments.
Lieutenant General Oluyede, who has been serving in an acting capacity since October 30, was appointed following Lagbaja’s incapacitation. Known for his leadership and operational expertise, Oluyede has been credited with fostering stability within the army during this transitional period.
The Senate, after acknowledging the President’s request, referred the matter to its Committee on Army for further evaluation and consideration. Senate President Akpabio assured Nigerians that the legislative body would prioritize the confirmation process to ensure continuity in the leadership of the Nigerian Army, especially during this critical time of national security challenges.
The Committee is expected to submit its findings in the coming days, paving the way for the Senate to deliberate and decide on the confirmation.
