SENATE CLARIFIES LEGAL FRAMEWORK FOR CCT CHAIRMAN’S REMOVAL

Date:

The Nigerian Senate has addressed a legal oversight in its resolution to remove Yakubu Danladi Umar as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). During Tuesday’s plenary, the legislative body corrected an earlier misquoted section of the 1999 Constitution, now citing Section 17(3) of the Fifth Schedule as the proper legal basis for the decision.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele presented a motion to correct the error, acknowledging the initial citation of Section 157 as inaccurate. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while admitting the oversight, emphasized that the removal of the CCT Chairman was based on credible allegations of misconduct and that the correction does not invalidate the decision.

“The Senate remains committed to upholding constitutional provisions and ensuring due process in all matters. This clarification is necessary to maintain the integrity of our legislative processes,” Akpabio stated.

Yakubu Danladi Umar’s removal followed accusations of abuse of office and unethical conduct. The Senate highlighted its role in maintaining checks and balances and ensuring accountability in public offices, reiterating its support for the rule of law.

The resolution underscores the Senate’s intention to address any lapses promptly, ensuring the public’s trust in its legislative oversight functions.
