Anambra Government Vows to Track Down Perpetrators of Nibo Cult-Related Killings

Date:

The Anambra State Government has pledged to pursue those responsible for the cult-related killings that claimed at least 13 lives in the Nibo community of Awka South Local Government Area on Sunday, October 20, 2024.

The incident occurred when suspected cultists stormed an area near the venue of the community’s ‘Nibo Onwa Asaa’ New Yam festival.

The assailants, who reportedly arrived in a Lexus 300 jeep, opened fire on individuals at an arena near Oye Nwochichi Market, close to Nibo Old Maternity. Eight people were killed instantly, with additional casualties reported as the attackers moved to a second location.

In a statement released on Monday, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, confirmed the government’s awareness of the tragic incident and vowed that efforts to track down the perpetrators were already underway.

“The Anambra State Government is fully aware of the deaths resulting from the alleged cult-related killings in Nibo. This is yet another violent crime linked to cultism, and we are resolute in our mission to end such occurrences,” the statement read.

Mefor extended the government’s condolences to the bereaved families and assured them that justice would be served. He also called on the public to provide any useful information that could lead to the arrest of the culprits, promising confidentiality and a reward.

The government encouraged law-abiding residents to continue their daily activities without fear, as security agencies worked to manage the situation. Hotlines for reporting relevant information will be made available to the public.
