France President, Emmanuel Macron Calls for Snap Election After Far-Right Victory in European Elections

Date:

France President, Mr. Emmanuel Macron has called for a snap election after a significant defeat by the far-right in the European Elections.

In a dramatic televised address, Mr. Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly as a way of handing back the Parliamentary future with a vote

The far-right national rally, led by Ms. Marine Le Pen and Mr. Jordan Bardella, won over 31% of the vote, more than doubling the tally of Mr. Macron’s Centrist Renaissance Party.

European Commission President, Ms. Ursula Von Der Leyen, who leads the Center-Right Group, noted that while the center held, the extremes on both the left and right gained support.

She emphasized the responsibility that comes with being an anchor of stability in Europe.
