UK Junior Doctors Begin Five-Day Strike Despite PM Starmer’s Warnings Over Patient Risk

Date:

Thousands of junior doctors across the United Kingdom commenced a five-day strike on Friday after last-minute negotiations with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government failed to produce an agreement on improved pay.

Doctors took to picket lines outside major hospitals early Friday, saying they were left with “no choice” following stalled talks, despite a 22.3 percent pay offer spread over two years that had been accepted last September.

The British Medical Association (BMA), which represents the junior doctors — those below consultant level — insisted the strike was necessary to reverse what it describes as a 21 percent real-terms pay erosion since 2008.

“We’re not working 21 percent less hard so why should our pay suffer?” said Melissa Ryan and Ross Nieuwoudt, co-chairs of the BMA’s junior doctors committee.

Prime Minister Starmer, who assumed office earlier this year, urged the doctors to reconsider their action, warning of the disruption to patients and added pressure on the already overburdened National Health Service (NHS).

“Lives will be blighted by this decision,” Starmer wrote in The Times, adding, “Our NHS and your patients need you. This strike will cause real damage and everyone loses.”

Health Minister Wes Streeting also appealed for restraint, stating in a letter published by The Telegraph that the government could not increase its pay offer further this year due to fiscal constraints.

The walkout mirrors last year’s wave of strikes under the previous Conservative government, which resisted the BMA’s demands for a 35 percent pay restoration in line with inflation over the last decade. Those actions led to widespread cancellations and delays in patient treatment.

While the Labour government has successfully brokered pay deals with other sectors — including teachers and train drivers — its standoff with junior doctors marks a major test for its handling of public sector discontent amid ongoing economic pressures.
