President Bola Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri in Borno State after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made on Thursday during an expanded session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, held in honour of the former Nigerian leader, who died in London on July 13, 2025.
“Before we take the prayers — in honour of his memory, with this special session of the Federal Executive Council (expanded) — can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri with a new name — Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” President Tinubu declared, drawing applause from attendees including former ministers and members of Buhari’s family.
The President praised Buhari’s character and leadership, describing him as a man of unwavering integrity.
“Yet it was in the quiet and unadorned settings of his private life that his true greatness was revealed: pious without show, just without cruelty, humane without sentimentality… His life was a rebuke to vice and a refuge for virtue,” Tinubu said.
Buhari, Nigeria’s second-longest-serving leader, was buried on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State, after a funeral attended by dignitaries from within and outside the country. He served as military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and as elected President from 2015 to 2023.
