Team Nigeria has triumphed in the women’s 4x400m relay event at the ongoing African Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon, delivering a spectacular gold medal performance on Wednesday night.
The quartet comprising Ella Onojuvwevwo, Patience Okon-George, Esther Elo Joseph, and Omolara Ogunmankinju clinched the top spot with a remarkable time of three minutes and twenty-seven point three-one seconds.
Zambia and Kenya secured the second and third positions respectively.
Despite this achievement, the Nigerian team’s hopes for the Olympics were dashed as their time fell short of the required standard.
Their performance, though victorious at the African Championships, did not meet the benchmark set by Cuba’s three minutes, twenty-six point zero eight seconds, which ranked them 16th globally in the World Relays.
In the men’s event, Team Nigeria narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth behind Botswana, Zambia, and Kenya.
