Spurs Stun Manchester United to Clinch Europa League Title, End 40-Year European Trophy Drought

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur have captured their first continental silverware in over four decades, edging Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday night in Bilbao.

Brennan Johnson scored the only goal of the match late in the first half, breaking Spurs’ 17-year trophy drought and sealing their first European triumph since 1984. The win also secures Tottenham a coveted spot in next season’s Champions League.

“This is what it’s all about — this club hasn’t won a trophy for 17 years,” said an emotional Johnson. “People kept saying Tottenham are a good team, but they never get it done — we got it done!”

Postecoglou’s Redemption Amid Uncertain Future

Despite lifting the trophy, manager Ange Postecoglou remains under scrutiny after a disappointing domestic campaign that sees Spurs finishing just one place above United in the Premier League’s lower half. On the eve of the final, Postecoglou defiantly declared he was “not a clown,” and on the night, his side delivered under pressure.

Scrappy Decider in Low-Quality Final

The final at San Mames was far from a classic, defined by frantic energy but lacking finesse, befitting two teams languishing in 16th and 17th in the league.

The decisive moment came in the 42nd minute, when a scruffy sequence saw Johnson nudge in a flicked cross from Pape Matar Sarr, the ball bouncing awkwardly off Luke Shaw and brushing Johnson’s boot before crossing the line. United goalkeeper Andre Onana was unable to stop it despite a desperate attempt.

United Fall Short, Miss Out on Europe

United pressed for an equaliser in the second half, nearly finding one through Rasmus Højlund, whose goal-bound header was dramatically cleared off the line by Micky van de Ven.

Late introductions of Alejandro Garnacho, Joshua Zirkzee, and Luke Shaw—who nearly redeemed himself with a close-range header—failed to break through Spurs’ deep-lying defence.

It marks the fourth defeat this season for United at the hands of Spurs and the end of a dismal campaign for the Red Devils, who will miss out on European football for the first time since 2014-15.

Manager Ruben Amorim, backed by fans throughout the night, admitted that while winning would not have solved the club’s deep-rooted issues, missing out on silverware and European qualification is a significant blow.

Spurs Join European Elite

With the win, Tottenham now hold three Europa League titles, tying them with elite clubs such as Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, and Atletico Madrid.

Recent Europa League winners:

  • 2025: Tottenham (ENG)
  • 2024: Atalanta (ITA)
  • 2023: Sevilla (ESP)
  • 2022: Eintracht Frankfurt (GER)
  • 2021: Villarreal (ESP)

  • 2019: Chelsea (ENG)
  • 2018: Atletico Madrid (ESP)
  • 2017: Manchester United (ENG)
  • 2016: Sevilla (ESP)

For Spurs and their long-suffering fans, the night in Bilbao may well mark the start of a new era — or, at the very least, a long-awaited end to decades of frustration on the European stage.
