Date:

A fan tragically died after falling from the stands during the UEFA Nations League final between Portugal and Spain in Munich on Sunday, UEFA has confirmed.

The supporter fell from the central tier into the press box below during the first period of extra time. Paramedics and police rushed to the scene, but the fan “sadly” could not be saved, a UEFA spokesperson said, describing the incident as a “medical emergency.”

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente expressed his condolences at the post-match press conference: “I want to show my deepest condolences because a fan has died. It reminds us, of what is important in life.”

A representative of the Portuguese camp similarly reflected on the tragedy, noting that the death “casts a shadow on our victory today.” Portugal coach Roberto Martinez added that it was “extremely sad news.”

The exact circumstances of the fall, estimated to be around eight metres, remain unclear as investigations continue.
