Southampton have dismissed manager Russell Martin following a 5-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, leaving the club nine points adrift of Premier League safety.
The 38-year-old Martin had guided the Saints to promotion last season in his first year at the helm, securing a play-off final victory over Leeds United at Wembley.
However, Sunday’s loss to Spurs marked Southampton’s 13th defeat in 16 league games this season.
Simon Rusk, the manager of Southampton’s Under-21s, will take interim charge of the senior team. His first match in charge will be a Carabao Cup quarterfinal against Premier League leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.
