Senate to Suspend Plenary for Two Weeks, Targets January 31 for 2025 Budget Passage

Date:

As both chambers of the National Assembly begin deliberations on the ₦49.7 trillion 2025 budget at the committee level this week, the Senate announced on Monday that it will suspend plenary for two weeks upon resumption on January 14.

The Senate has also scheduled an open day for budget consideration this Thursday, allowing inputs from various stakeholders, including heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (APC, Ogun West), revealed during a meeting with the chairpersons of other standing committees that the tentative date for laying reports on the 2025 Appropriation Bill before both the Senate and the House of Representatives is January 31, 2025.

Senator Adeola acknowledged the limited timeframe for the consideration and passage of the 2025 budget but emphasized the need for efficiency in delivering results. The meeting was attended by several committee chairpersons and principal officers, including Deputy Leader Senator Lola Ashiru (APC, Kwara South) and Senate Whip Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North).

Following the session, Senator Adeola led a closed-door meeting with the standing committee chairpersons to finalize discussions on the budget process.
