Senate President Reaffirms National Assembly’s Commitment to Sustainable Energy Investments

Date:

Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for investments in sustainable energy projects across Nigeria.

Speaking at the 8th Energy Summit organized by Solewant Group in Rivers State, with the theme “Pioneering Technology and Innovation for Transition to Sustainable Energy Development in Africa,” Senator Akpabio emphasized the critical role of technology and innovation in Africa’s energy transition.

He was represented at the event by the Senate Deputy Minority Whip, Osita Ngwu.

“Africa stands at a pivotal moment in its history as the world shifts towards sustainability. Our continent faces the dual challenge of addressing energy demands while transitioning to cleaner and more sustainable systems. This summit highlights the vital role of technology and innovation in achieving this transition,” Akpabio stated.

The Senate President called for leveraging Africa’s abundant renewable energy resources, including solar, hydro, and geothermal energy, and highlighted the potential of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence to unlock these resources.

He stressed the importance of fostering collaboration among government, private sector players, academia, and development partners to achieve energy access for all, particularly in rural areas. Such partnerships, he said, would help meet the aspirations of Africa’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

“As policymakers, we must continue to create an environment conducive to sustainable energy investments, prioritize research and development, and support local entrepreneurs driving technological advancements,” he noted.

He also emphasized innovation as a tool for creating jobs, empowering communities, and protecting the environment, stating that the transition to sustainable energy was no longer optional but imperative.

“The journey to sustainable energy requires bold ideas and actionable solutions. Together, we can position Africa at the forefront of energy development, ensuring a brighter, greener future where no one is left behind,” he concluded.

The summit served as a platform for meaningful dialogue on scalable innovations and actionable strategies to advance sustainable energy solutions in Africa.
