The Nigerian Senate has passed the South-West Development Commission Bill, 2024, marking a significant step towards accelerating infrastructural development in the region. The bill, which was read for the third time and approved by the Senators present during Thursday’s plenary, aims to create a framework for addressing regional development challenges.
Following the passage of the bill, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, praised the Senator Kaka-led committee for its thorough work in bringing the bill to fruition.
This development comes on the heels of similar legislative actions establishing the North-West Development Commission, North-Central Development Commission, and the South-East Development Commission in previous sessions.
In addition to this, the Senate confirmed the appointment of Mrs. Olukemi Victoria Iyantan as a Commissioner of the National Population Commission (NPC), representing Ondo State. The confirmation followed the recommendation of the Senate Committee on National Identity Card and National Population, which was approved by a voice vote, led by Senator Barau Jibrin.
Mrs Iyantan will now join other commissioners and the NPC Chairman in driving the commission’s mandate forward.
