Ronaldo Ends Winless Run Against Germany as Portugal Reaches Nations League Final

Date:

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winning goal as Portugal defeated Germany 2-1 in the UEFA Nations League semi-final on Wednesday, securing a historic first victory over the Germans and a place in Sunday’s final.

The match, played in storm-hit Munich, saw Ronaldo tap in from close range in the 68th minute — his 137th international goal — ending a personal streak of five straight defeats against Germany, the longest winless run he had against any national side.

Germany had taken the lead early in the second half through a moment of brilliance from Florian Wirtz, who initiated and finished a clever move with a well-placed header after linking up with Joshua Kimmich.

But Portugal responded with flair. Substitute Francisco Conceição delivered a stunning solo equaliser in the 60th minute, sprinting from midfield and curling a shot past Marc-André ter Stegen to draw level.

Ronaldo, who had earlier missed two good chances, finally made his mark when he converted a pinpoint cross from Nuno Mendes. The goal not only gave Portugal the win but also added to Ronaldo’s record tally of international goals.

Germany came close to equalising in the dying minutes when Munich-born Karim Adeyemi struck the crossbar, but Portugal held firm to book their spot in the final, where they will meet either Spain or France.

The match had kicked off 10 minutes late due to a violent hailstorm that left the pitch covered in ice, affecting both teams’ rhythm early on. Portugal, with four players fresh off a Champions League victory, adapted better as the game wore on.

Germany’s loss marks only their second defeat in 18 games under manager Julian Nagelsmann and dampens hopes ahead of their home Euro 2028 campaign.

Portugal will now aim to claim their second Nations League title, having lifted the inaugural trophy in 2019.
