Rivers Assembly Backs State of Emergency, Blames Suspended Governor Fubara

Date:

The Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, citing the prolonged political crisis that has plagued the region for over a year. In a statement issued by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the Assembly blamed suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for the crisis, accusing him of “despotic and tyrannical actions.”

The Assembly highlighted Fubara’s alleged serial disobedience of court judgments, failure to govern in line with his oath of office, and unconstitutional obstruction of the legislative arm as key factors that precipitated the crisis.

“The Governor’s despotic and tyrannical actions, as confirmed by the courts, have unconstitutionally hindered the Rivers State House of Assembly from functioning, underlies the situation,” Amaewhule stated.

The Speaker described the President’s decision as being in the “best interest of the country” and urged residents to remain calm as the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), takes charge.

“We assure you all, our constituents, that we would abide by this declaration even though it is not what we prayed for,” the statement read. “Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the country, therefore, we call on you all to remain calm as the Sole Administrator appointed by the President assumes his duty in the best interest of our state and nation.”

Amaewhule pledged the Assembly’s full support to the Sole Administrator, promising to provide any assistance required to restore stability and effective governance in Rivers State.

The declaration of a state of emergency marks a critical juncture in the political crisis that has gripped Rivers State for over a year. It underscores the federal government’s intervention to address the escalating tensions and restore order in the state.
