Reps Launch Probe Into Police Over ₦6bn Contract Scandal, Financial Misconduct

Date:

The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) over multiple allegations of corruption, financial misconduct, and abuse of office believed to be undermining national security.

The decision followed a motion of urgent public importance jointly sponsored by Hon. Ibe Osonwa, Hon. Mark Esset, and Hon. Mohammed Jafaru. The lawmakers raised concerns that the police’s constitutional role in safeguarding lives and property was being eroded by persistent reports of procurement breaches and financial irregularities.

One of the most troubling revelations cited by the lawmakers is the alleged award of a ₦6 billion contract for police uniforms to Crown Nature Nigeria Limited. The contract was reportedly split into 66 separate contracts — an action suspected to have been taken to bypass provisions of the Public Procurement Act.

Describing the actions as a systematic abuse of office and blatant disregard for due process, the House mandated its Committees on Public Accounts and Public Procurement to investigate the matter and report back within six weeks.

In other legislative actions, the House passed for second reading a Bill for an Act to establish the Federal Capital Territory Area Councils Service Commission. The proposed legislation, sponsored by Hon. Moshood Olarewaju Oshun, seeks to enhance the administrative and operational efficiency of area councils within the FCT.

Similarly, a bill sponsored by Hon. Adebayo Balogun to establish the Federal Institute for Diving Technology in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State also passed second reading. The institute is expected to offer full-time courses in deep sea (ocean) diving and related studies.
