President Tinubu Appeals to Nigerians to Shelve Planned Hardship Protest

Date:

President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians to shelve the planned ‘EndBadGovernance’ Protest slated for the 1st of August.

Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, who briefed State House Correspondents after a meeting with the President on Tuesday, said President Tinubu urged the organisers of the protest to shelve the plan and await the President’s response to their complaints.

The protest against economic hardship, which is gaining traction on social media, has been scheduled to be held across all States of the Federation as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, on 1st August.

However, the organisers of the protest have been faceless.

In recent months, prices of food and essential commodities have surged, exacerbating one of Nigeria’s most severe inflation and economic crises, triggered by the government’s decisions to remove petrol subsidies and unify forex windows.

The federal government, through the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Nigeria Police Force, and the House of Representatives, has however cautioned against the planned demonstration.

Presidential Spokesman, Mr. Bayo Onanuga also warned that if the planned protest proceeds, it could escalate into asset destruction akin to the aftermath of the EndSars protests against police brutality and extrajudicial killings in October 2020.
