The casualty figure from fresh attacks in Plateau State’s Bokkos Local Government Area has risen to 52, local authorities confirmed Friday, marking another deadly episode in the restive region.
Latest Developments:
- 40 additional bodies recovered Wednesday/Thursday during search operations
- 31 victims given mass burial Thursday in Bokkos
- 5 children burned alive in Hurti village
- 11 killed in Ruwi, 4 in Manguna, 1 in Daffo villages
- Search continues for missing persons in Hurti/Mbar villages
Plateau Information Commissioner Joyce Ramnap condemned the attacks in an official statement:
“Security agencies have deployed and dominated these areas to ensure normalcy returns… Important arrests have been made which will hopefully help in stemming the tide of this ugly situation.”
The commissioner urged restraint, warning against vigilante justice while revealing enhanced security measures:
“The government has deployed strategic measures to enhance intelligence gathering, surveillance, and rapid response mechanisms in collaboration with security operatives.”
The violence continues a deadly cycle in Plateau, coming just four months after Christmas 2023 attacks killed 200 Christians and May 2023 Wase massacre left 40 dead. Religious/community leaders have been mobilized to preach peace as tensions threaten to spiral.
Security forces maintain heavy presence in affected villages, with residents advised to use official channels to report threats. The state government vows to prosecute perpetrators while grappling with the humanitarian fallout of displaced communities.
