South African billionaire Dr. Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected as the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for a second four-year term. The announcement was made on Wednesday during the 14th Extraordinary General Assembly of CAF, held in Cairo, Egypt.
Motsepe, who first assumed the role in 2021, made history as the first English-speaking president of the continental football body. He took over from Ahmad Ahmad, who was suspended by FIFA in November 2020 following allegations of financial misconduct.
During his first term, Motsepe spearheaded significant advancements in African football, including a 40% increase in the prize money for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which now stands at seven million dollars. His leadership has also focused on improving infrastructure, governance, and the overall development of the sport across the continent.
Motsepe’s re-election reflects the confidence of CAF’s member associations in his vision and commitment to elevating African football to new heights
