A yet-to-be-identified man has been killed in a fresh outbreak of cult-related violence in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, marking the latest incident in a series of deadly clashes between rival groups in the region.
The victim was reportedly shot dead on Saturday night opposite a fuel station in the Camp area, according to local sources. Eyewitnesses said armed assailants ambushed the man while he was riding a motorcycle, shooting him at close range and leaving his body in a pool of blood.
“He was attacked in front of the fuel station. Some people said he was a member of the Aye cult and that Eiye members were behind the killing,” a community source disclosed on Monday under condition of anonymity.
The incident comes barely two weeks after at least four people were feared killed in twin clashes between the Eiye and Aye confraternities in the Alogi, Somorin, and Obantoko areas of the same local government.
A senior police officer confirmed the latest killing in a brief telephone conversation, stating, “Yes, it happened opposite the Dambod fuel station.” However, efforts to reach the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, for an official statement were unsuccessful as she had not responded to inquiries at press time.
The recurring violence has heightened tension in the area, with residents expressing fear over the escalating reprisal attacks between the two rival cult groups. Police authorities have yet to announce any arrests in connection with the latest killing.
This report follows a March 18 incident where simultaneous clashes in Alogi, Obantoko, and Aregbe led to multiple fatalities, as Eiye and Aye members targeted each other in a cycle of revenge killings.
