The much-anticipated “Fearless in October” protest at Eagles Square, Abuja, unexpectedly fizzled out today as no demonstrators showed up, despite widespread expectations of a large turnout.
Security operatives had blocked all entrances to Eagles Square, preparing for a crowd that never materialized, leaving the area quiet and empty.
Our FCT correspondent, Naomi Oleribe, reports that a large security presence stretched from the Federal Secretariat to the National Ministries surrounding the square. Police officers directed vehicles to reroute as no cars were allowed near the protest site.
In conversations with Abuja residents, many voiced concerns about the country’s economic hardships and the need for the government to improve the standard of living.
Meanwhile, other areas in the FCT, including Jabi, Utako, and Berger Junction, saw scattered protests, where security forces used tear gas to disperse demonstrators.
As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Anniversary, the reality of hunger, poverty, and rising transportation costs continues to weigh heavily on citizens.
