Amid rising tensions in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, religious leaders have raised urgent alarms over renewed violence.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Northern Nigeria has strongly condemned the recent brutal killings in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, describing them as “senseless and barbaric” in an official statement.
Signed by Chairman Rev. Dr. Yakubu Pam, the declaration expressed profound grief over the attacks that claimed numerous innocent lives, stating: “These repeated acts of violence are not only a violation of human dignity and the sanctity of life, but they are also a direct threat to the peace and unity of our state and the nation at large.”
The religious body called for immediate action from security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators and urged government at all levels to implement stronger protective measures for vulnerable communities. Rev. Pam emphasized the critical need for traditional rulers, religious leaders, security operatives and community organizations to unite in breaking the cycle of violence that has plagued Plateau State for years.
“We stand in solidarity with the grieving families and entire communities affected by this tragedy,” the statement continued. “We urge all stakeholders to work collectively towards lasting peace and justice. Plateau must not bleed again.”
