The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has reinforced its commitment to cleaner, more sustainable energy by donating 35 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG).
The official handover ceremony took place on Monday at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, where the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Bashir Ojulari, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to supporting Nigeria’s transition to alternative fuels.
“This donation aligns with NNPC Ltd’s vision to support the adoption of CNG as a cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable fuel alternative,” Ojulari stated. He added that significant progress has already been made in gas supply, infrastructure development, distribution, and retail expansion.
Also present at the event, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, described the buses as “more than just vehicles” and praised their potential to drive socio-economic benefits.
“They symbolise President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in action, aimed at reducing transportation costs, decreasing petrol dependency, and utilising our natural gas wealth for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Ekpo said.
NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President for Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, underscored the economic advantages of transitioning to CNG, noting cost savings, reduced dependence on premium motor spirit (PMS) and automotive gas oil (AGO), and support for the domestic gas industry.
The company’s Executive Vice President for Gas, Power, and New Energy also reiterated NNPC Ltd’s commitment to expanding the commercialisation of CNG across Nigeria, noting growing momentum for alternative fuel adoption.
Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, said the donation reflects the broader vision of NNPC Ltd in shaping an inclusive and sustainable energy future for the country.
Programme Coordinator and CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Michael Oluwagbemi, praised NNPC Ltd as a reliable partner from the outset, describing the donation as a “major boost” toward achieving national CNG targets.
Background
The Presidential Initiative on CNG was established to ease transportation challenges for Nigerians, enhance environmental sustainability, and maximise the utilisation of Nigeria’s natural gas reserves.
The 35 donated CNG buses are expected to serve as pilot models for public transport systems in key cities across the country.
