Nigeria’s Flying Eagles Soar Past Senegal to Reach U-20 AFCON Semifinals

Date:

Nigeria’s Under-20 national team secured a dramatic 3-1 penalty shootout victory over Senegal on Monday to advance to the semifinals of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a tense 0-0 draw in regulation and extra time. The hard-fought win at the Stade Olympique in Egypt not only keeps Nigeria’s continental title hopes alive but also guarantees qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

Goalkeeper Nathaniel Nwosu emerged as the hero for the Flying Eagles, making two crucial saves during the shootout after keeping a clean sheet through 120 minutes of play. Nigeria’s penalty scorers included captain Daniel Daga, Ibrahim Mohammed, and substitute Umar Abubakar, while Senegal managed just one successful attempt from the spot.

The victory marks Nigeria’s first semifinal appearance at the tournament since 2019 and continues their impressive defensive form, having conceded just one goal in four matches. Coach Ladan Bosso’s squad will now face either Mali or Tunisia in Thursday’s semifinal as they chase Nigeria’s eighth U-20 AFCON title.

With this result, the Flying Eagles join three other African nations in securing spots for the U-20 World Cup, scheduled for November 2025. The team’s performance provides optimism for Nigerian football fans after recent struggles at senior AFCON tournaments.
