Security forces operating under Operation Safe Haven successfully rescued 16 kidnapped victims, including six children, during a counterinsurgency operation along the Mangu-Jos road in Plateau State. Military spokesperson Major Samson Zhakom confirmed the Sunday night rescue occurred when troops patrolling near Mararaban Kantoma discovered an abandoned vehicle and tracked the kidnappers into nearby bushes.
The kidnappers opened fire upon encountering the troops but were overpowered by superior firepower, forcing them to flee and abandon their captives. All 16 victims received medical attention for minor injuries before being escorted to safety. The successful operation comes amid escalating security challenges in Plateau, where 40 people were recently killed in Bassa Local Government Area.
In a separate incident, troops repelled a terrorist attack targeting Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum’s convoy. While details remain scarce, the attempted ambush underscores persistent security threats in the northeast. These simultaneous operations highlight both the effectiveness and ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.
