Nigerian Striker Awoniyi Undergoes Emergency Abdominal Surgery After Match Injury

Date:

Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone emergency abdominal surgery following an injury sustained during Sunday’s dramatic 2-2 Premier League clash with Leicester City at the City Ground.

The Nigerian international collided with the goalpost in a valiant attempt to convert a cross from Anthony Elanga. Despite receiving extended on-field treatment, Awoniyi initially continued playing before being substituted.

Injury Worsened Overnight

According to a statement released by Nottingham Forest on Monday via their official X (formerly Twitter) account, the severity of the injury became clear after further medical evaluation, prompting urgent surgical intervention.

“The Club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City,” the statement read.
“Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. The Club will provide further updates when appropriate.”

Forest sources say the surgery was successful and not considered life-threatening, though the player’s recovery timeline remains uncertain.

Controversy on the Touchline

The situation sparked a dramatic scene at full-time as club owner Evangelos Marinakis stormed onto the pitch to confront manager Nuno Espírito Santo over the decision to leave Awoniyi on the pitch briefly after the injury.

Marinakis, visibly distressed, reportedly expressed concern about the player’s well-being and questioned the decision-making around his treatment, despite Nuno having consulted medical staff during stoppage time.

Forest’s Champions League Hopes Fading

The incident overshadowed a frustrating result for Forest, whose ambitions of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League suffered a major blow. The club currently sits seventh in the Premier League — one point outside the top five — with two games remaining against West Ham and Chelsea.

While Forest are now unlikely to secure a Champions League spot, they are mathematically guaranteed at least a place in next season’s UEFA Conference League, marking their first European campaign since 1995-96.
