Nigeria has secured two silver medals at the 2024 Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The medals were won by Elvis Chiedozie Ekwelem from Rivers State and Oghenerukevwe Patrick Esemitodje from Lagos State, showcasing the country’s mathematical talent on the continental stage.
The annual competition brought together young mathematical scholars from over 20 African countries, with eight additional countries participating virtually. The event aimed to foster academic excellence and research among young African students.
Prof. Zeblon Vilakazi, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Witwatersrand and host of the Olympiad commended the Nigerian students for their exceptional intellectual rigor, dedication, and talent.
He noted that their performance reflects a deep understanding of the subject and a strong commitment to excelling in mathematics at the continental level.
Prof. Vilakazi highlighted the significance of the competition in promoting mathematical excellence across Africa and expressed confidence in the future contributions of these young scholars to the field.
