The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended an officer captured in a viral video soliciting a bribe from a tourist at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The incident, which has sparked public outrage, has prompted swift action from the NIS.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Comptroller General Kemi Nandap announced the indefinite suspension of Okpravero Ufuoma, an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI 2). Nandap made it clear that Ufuoma’s conduct is not in line with the values and professionalism upheld by the NIS.
The video, which circulated widely on social media under the title “This is how Immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,” shows Ufuoma demanding financial gratification from a traveler. The footage has fueled widespread criticism, with many Nigerians urging the NIS to take strong action against the officer involved.
“The conduct of the officer, identified as Okpravero C. Ufuoma, an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI 2) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, does not reflect the values and ethics of professionalism upheld by the NIS,” Nandap stated.
The NIS strongly condemned the officer’s actions, noting that they undermined ongoing efforts to improve service standards. “This disgraceful act is not representative of our commitment to hospitality, reception, and courtesy,” the statement added.
The agency also highlighted ongoing reforms, including the installation of electronic gates (e-gates) at all of Nigeria’s international airports to streamline travel processes and prevent similar incidents.
As disciplinary procedures are initiated, Ufuoma remains suspended, with the NIS reiterating its commitment to a Zero-Tolerance for Corruption policy.
The agency further assured the public of its dedication to maintaining excellence in service delivery, in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
