The Nigerian Navy has intercepted a major rice smuggling operation along the Epe-Ijebu-Ode Expressway, seizing 213 bags of foreign rice from six vehicles.
The Executive Officer of the Naval Base, Epe, Commander Chukwudi Atuba, confirmed the operation in a statement on Monday. He explained that the intervention was based on intelligence reports, prompting a swift response from the Navy’s patrol team on January 22.
“On sighting our team, the suspects abandoned their vehicles and fled into the bush, leaving behind the contraband,” Atuba stated.
Handover to Nigerian Customs Service
Following the interception, the smuggled rice was handed over to the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) for further investigation and necessary action. The official transfer was conducted by Navy Lieutenant AS Bello, who passed custody of the seized goods to Deputy Comptroller Odoemenah, representing Comptroller Olajide of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Ikeja.
Navy Issues Stern Warning to Smugglers
Commander Atuba warned smugglers and criminal elements to desist from illegal activities, emphasizing that the Nigerian Navy remains committed to protecting the nation’s waterways and borders.
“The Nigerian Navy, in line with the mission and vision of Vice Admiral Ikechukwu Ogala, remains resolute and determined to rid the environment of all illegalities,” he stated.
He further cautioned that the Epe-Ijebu-Ode Expressway, the Epe area, and surrounding regions would be closely monitored to prevent smuggling activities.
“Smugglers should understand that these activities will not benefit them. The Nigerian Navy is determined to rid the maritime environment and other areas under its jurisdiction of illegality,” Atuba reiterated.
The interception reflects the Nigerian Navy’s ongoing efforts to curb smuggling, protect the economy, and strengthen inter-agency collaboration with the Nigerian Customs Service.
