The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has described the National Youth Games as a critical platform for revitalizing Nigeria’s sports industry.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 8th edition of the Games, held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, Senator Enoh emphasized the importance of grassroots sports in nurturing young talent and positioning Nigeria for success on the global stage.
Highlighting the role of grassroots sports development in building future champions and promoting national unity, Enoh reiterated the federal government’s commitment to repositioning the sports sector under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He stressed the importance of fostering talent from the grassroots to elite levels of competition, particularly in light of the lessons learned from the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Senaor Enoh also commended Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, for his support in hosting the event, which has seen a record-breaking participation of 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials.
He thanked the governors of participating states and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for their sponsorship and urged athletes to compete fairly and abide by the rules.
The minister concluded by noting that the Games serve as a springboard for developing the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions and setting new world records.
