The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has set up a committee of officers to collect all allegations of accidental air strikes on civilians and review the conditions leading to such accidents.
Air Marshal Oladayo, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) disclosed this on Thursday at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Air Operations Seminar in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Capital.
The Marshal said the committee will develop effective measures to mitigate future incidences of collateral injuries to civilians during NAF operations.
He also noted that the investigations are seeking to promote accountability and enable NAF to learn important lessons in order to avoid or curb similar cases in the future, and also take extra precautions to reduce civilian harm and casualties in areas witnessing conflict.
According to a statement by NAF Edward Gabkwet, NAF spokesman, the Marshal said “the efforts to mitigate civilian casualties are not just a reflection of NAF’s values as a service but also strategically imperative to our operations.”
Concerning the security challenges Nigeria currently faces, he opined that the Armed Forces of Nigeria have made meaningful headway in curtailing and destroying the resources and capabilities of miscreants aiming to destabilise the country.
