Fenerbahçe manager José Mourinho sparked controversy Wednesday night after a physical confrontation with Galatasaray boss Okan Buruk following their Turkish Cup semifinal clash.
The incident occurred after Galatasaray’s 1-0 victory, when a full-scale brawl broke out between players – resulting in three red cards. Video footage shows Mourinho grabbing Buruk’s nose during the melee, causing the Galatasaray coach to fall while clutching his face.
Galatasaray vice president Metin Öztürk strongly condemned Mourinho’s actions, stating: “This is an attack on Turkish football’s values. Mourinho continues provoking controversies with his unacceptable behavior.”
The Turkish Football Federation is reviewing the incident, with potential disciplinary action pending against both clubs and coaching staff. This marks another contentious chapter in Mourinho’s turbulent first season in Turkey, where he’s already received multiple suspensions for criticizing officials.
Fenerbahçe officials declined immediate comment, while Mourinho left the stadium without addressing reporters. The altercation overshadows Galatasaray’s advancement to the cup final against rivals Besiktas next month.
