Manchester City’s Champions League journey came to a disappointing end as Kylian Mbappé’s stunning hat-trick propelled defending champions Real Madrid to a dominant victory, securing their place in the last 16.
Pep Guardiola’s team had hoped to overturn a 3-2 deficit from the first leg of the play-off. However, the match was essentially decided in the opening four minutes when Mbappé expertly lobbed the ball into the net following a pass from Raul Asencio, extending Real Madrid’s advantage.
Mbappé added two more goals, leading Real Madrid to a 3-1 victory on the night and a commanding 6-3 aggregate win.
Real Madrid will face one of two potential opponents in the next round, either Bayer Leverkusen or Atlético Madrid.
