Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has been hospitalised with a severe case of gastroenteritis, placing his participation in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in doubt.
The French international and World Cup winner was absent from Madrid’s opening match of the tournament against Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal on Wednesday in Miami, after reportedly suffering from a high fever.
Manager Xabi Alonso had earlier expressed optimism that Mbappé could recover in time to feature in their next fixture against Mexican club Pachuca on Sunday. However, the latest medical update suggests a longer recovery period may be required.
In an official statement released Thursday afternoon, Real Madrid confirmed that the 25-year-old star had been diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis and is currently undergoing hospital tests and treatment.
The club did not provide a timeline for his return but noted that further updates would be issued based on medical assessments.
Mbappé’s condition now casts uncertainty over his availability for the rest of the month-long tournament, which continues in the United States through early July.
