Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has maintained his claim that the Federal Government is withholding Nigeria LNG Limited, NLNG, dividends due to states and local governments.

Makinde had claimed during a 2027 Budget Stakeholders’ Consultative Engagement in Ibadan that each state was entitled to ₦250 billion from the funds, but that payment would not be made until after the 2027 elections.

The Presidency rejected the allegation, describing it as false and arguing that ₦250 billion for each of the 36 states would amount to ₦9 trillion.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said such a distribution would require total NLNG dividends exceeding ₦33 trillion under the existing Federation Account allocation formula.

However, Makinde, through his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, insisted that his claims were based on a reconciliation exercise commissioned by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum with the support of the Federal Government.

According to the governor, the exercise identified a shortfall of about ₦9 trillion allegedly due to states and local governments, with the report in the custody of both the Federal Government and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

Makinde also questioned how NLNG dividends received by the Federation Account had been distributed, including the $3 billion the Presidency says was received under the current administration.

The governor, who is Vice-Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, says he stands by his claims and has urged the Presidency to address what he described as the substance of the matter.
