Lagos Deploys 3,000 Smart Cameras to Enforce Traffic Laws

Date:

Lagos, Nigeria – In a major push to curb traffic violations and improve road safety, the Lagos State Government has begun installing 3,000 electronic police (e-police) and speed limit cameras across the state.

Engr. Akin-George Fashola, Director of the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), disclosed the initiative during a radio program on Traffic Radio 96.1 FM, noting that the technology will automatically detect and penalize offenders.

Key Locations Under Surveillance

  • Alapere-Ogudu Road: 80 km/h (inbound Alausa) & 60 km/h (inbound Iyana Oworo)
  • Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way: 60 km/h speed limit
  • Allen Junction & Nurudeen Olowopopo Road (Ikeja): Red-light runners and other violations

“Motorists must heed warning signs at these spots to avoid penalties,” Fashola warned, adding that speed limit breaches attract a ₦50,000 fine, though wrongly ticketed drivers can appeal with evidence.

The VIS Director clarified that commercial vehicles face equal scrutiny, with an average of 50 buses impounded daily for traffic offenses.

To streamline processes, Lagos introduced:
✔ Online roadworthiness recertification for existing vehicles
✔ Auto verification portal for used-car buyers to check vehicle history

Residents can access these services via the VIS website or any of the 45 VIS centers statewide.
