The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has disclosed that the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos is currently fractured into three competing factions, creating complications ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, revealed the development during a stakeholders’ forum held in Ikeja on Thursday. She stated that the division has hindered the commission’s ability to engage effectively with the party ahead of the July 12 polls.
“We are awaiting a directive from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on which faction of the Labour Party to officially recognize for the elections,” Justice Okikiolu-Ighile said.
Despite the challenge, she reaffirmed LASIEC’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, emphasizing that public confidence in the electoral process depends on transparency and collective participation.
Efforts to Promote Inclusivity
In a bid to encourage broader participation, LASIEC has provided free nomination forms for:
- Female aspirants
- Persons living with disabilities
- Youth candidates
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile urged political stakeholders to mobilize voters, uphold internal party democracy, and support LASIEC’s efforts to ensure a level playing field.
Voter Education Key to Credible Polls – LASIEC
Folashade Omowole, LASIEC’s Permanent Secretary, stressed the importance of voter education in combating apathy, misinformation, and electoral violence.
“Credible elections reflecting the people’s will can only be achieved through collaboration, advocacy, and responsible leadership,” Omowole stated.
The commission assured stakeholders of its dedication to fairness, calling for cooperation to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
