Labour Party Crisis Escalates as Abure Challenges Obi Over Campaign Funds

Date:

Factional Labour Party chairman Julius Abure has thrown down the gauntlet to Peter Obi and other party critics, daring them to publicly account for all campaign donations made during the 2023 elections. In a fiery address at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, Abure claimed he had rejected “billions of naira” in questionable offers during the election period and warned of imminent revelations that would expose his detractors.

The embattled chairman specifically targeted Obi, demanding the former presidential candidate disclose any funds he personally contributed to the party. “Let any of them come out and tell the world what they gave to me or the party,” Abure challenged, threatening to hold a world press conference where he would “open his mouth” and reduce his critics to “rotten eggs that nobody will ever buy.”

The outburst comes amid a bitter leadership struggle between Abure’s faction and a rival camp led by Senator Nenadi Usman and backed by Obi and Abia Governor Alex Otti. The meeting, convened by AMAC/Bwari Rep Joshua Chinedu Obika, saw Abure accuse certain elected LP officials of betrayal after they allegedly benefited from the party’s platform only to now seek his removal.

Political analysts note the public airing of financial grievances marks a dangerous escalation in Labour Party’s internal crisis, potentially damaging its credibility as Nigeria’s third-largest political force. With neither faction showing willingness to back down, the party faces possible disintegration ahead of future elections unless urgent reconciliation efforts are made.
