Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has cautioned that former Defense Minister General Theophilus Danjuma’s recent call for Nigerians to arm themselves against insecurity could plunge the nation into anarchy.
The governor, appearing Monday on a national morning program, stated: “He (Danjuma) is a very senior security person who should be respected. But suggesting citizens should defend themselves invites chaos. His words require careful analysis.”
Highlighting Jigawa’s security strategy as a model, Namadi detailed his administration’s multipronged approach:
- Deployment of security experts
- Active engagement with traditional institutions
- Establishment of community communication committees
“Through these measures, our people now understand violence isn’t the solution. We haven’t reached the point where self-armament becomes necessary,” he asserted.
On institutional reforms, the governor confirmed ongoing National Economic Council discussions about state police, noting: “The proposal remains active with widespread state interest. I’m confident it will materialize.”
The remarks come amid escalating national debate about civilian protection measures following increased attacks in several regions. Jigawa currently ranks among Nigeria’s most peaceful states, a status the governor attributes to proactive governance rather than communal militarization.
