Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed a fierce and unforgiving response against Israel on Wednesday, declaring his regime would show “no mercy” toward its leaders as the Israel-Iran conflict escalates and U.S. President Donald Trump intensifies pressure on Tehran.
“We must give a strong response to the terrorist Zionist regime. We will show the Zionists no mercy,” Khamenei said in a statement posted to X.
The remarks came just hours after Trump issued a stark ultimatum for Iran’s “unconditional surrender”, while also boasting on social media that the United States had the capacity to assassinate Khamenei, though “not for now.”
The Iranian leader’s warning followed a week of intensified Israeli airstrikes that have hit not only military and nuclear sites, but also residential neighborhoods in Tehran and other cities. Iranian authorities say civilian casualties have been mounting as a result of the bombardment, though official figures have not been recently updated.
In retaliation, Iran has launched waves of missile and drone attacks, and early Wednesday claimed to have fired hypersonic missiles at Israeli targets—marking a significant escalation in weapons deployment.
This rapidly worsening conflict has drawn global concern, especially as Trump signals a possible U.S. entry into the war, with discussions reportedly underway about joining Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
The war has already caused widespread panic across Tehran, triggered fuel rationing, and prompted tens of thousands to flee the capital amid fears of further attacks.
