On Thursday evening, heavily armed security personnel stormed and raided the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja, as reported by the union. The NLC stated that the operatives arrived at Labour House, its headquarters, around 8:30 pm.
“They broke in and ransacked the bookshop on the 2nd floor, carting away hundreds of books and other publications,” said Benson Upah, the NLC’s head of Media and Public Relations.
The invading troops claimed they were searching for seditious materials related to the #EndBadGovernance protests. The NLC is still assessing the full extent of the items taken during the raid.
The union condemned the raid, highlighting the lack of legal documentation authorizing the operation and the unprecedented nature of such an action.
“Today is indeed a very sad day for our democracy,” the NLC declared, demanding the immediate withdrawal of security operatives from its headquarters and the return of the confiscated materials by the end of the following workday.
