Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has unveiled plans to establish and equip a special task force to enforce proper waste disposal and penalize violators found dumping refuse in unauthorized areas. The Governor made this announcement during the reception and official launch ceremony for newly acquired waste management equipment at the Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency Office in Itam.
Governor Eno emphasized that maintaining Akwa Ibom’s reputation as the cleanest state in Nigeria remains a top priority.
He praised the efforts of local government officials and environmental agencies for their dedication to keeping the state clean and urged residents to actively participate in ensuring environmental sustainability. To encourage healthy competition among communities, he promised to reward the cleanest local government area in the state.
The Governor also announced plans to relocate the dump site at Uyo Village Road to a more secluded area to address concerns over environmental pollution and public health. Furthermore, he expressed intentions to collaborate with private waste management agencies to convert waste materials into wealth, creating employment opportunities and contributing to the state’s economy.
The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, Mr. Prince Ikim, revealed that the state generates between 400 and 600 tons of waste daily. He assured residents that the new waste management equipment would significantly improve the efficiency of waste disposal and keep the state cleaner. Supporting this stance, the Permanent Secretary of Environment and Mineral Resources, Mrs. Iquo Abia, highlighted the vital role effective waste management plays in enhancing public health.
