Luis Rubiales, the former president of Spain’s football federation (RFEF), has been convicted of sexual assault for kissing Spanish footballer Jenni Hermoso without her consent during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final medal ceremony.
The Spanish court ruled that Rubiales’ actions constituted sexual assault, ordering him to pay a fine of over €10,000. However, the High Court acquitted him of coercion charges, which alleged that he pressured Hermoso into publicly declaring that the kiss was consensual.
The controversial incident took place in Sydney, Australia, following Spain’s 1-0 victory over England in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final. As the team celebrated their historic win, Rubiales grabbed Hermoso’s head and kissed her on the lips, an act that sparked global outrage and widespread criticism.
As part of the court’s ruling, Rubiales has also been banned for one year from approaching Jenni Hermoso within 200 meters or communicating with her in any form.
This landmark ruling marks a significant moment in sports and gender justice, reinforcing the importance of consent and accountability in professional environments.
